Opportunities for Tiwi Apprentices

Opportunities for Tiwi Apprentices

Categories: Training, Apprenticeships, News

Since joining TITEB in September 2023, GTO Manager Max Browne has brought new energy and focus to our Group Training Organisation. This year, we’ve been working on growing the program and making it easier for Tiwi people to take on apprenticeships and traineeships.

The GTO model means we can legally employ apprentices and place them with host businesses. With the support of Tiwi Regional Council and CatholicCare NT, we’ve started apprenticeships in admin and childcare in Wurrumiyanga.

We’ve also looked closely at the barriers Tiwi people face, including a lack of local vacancies, the need to travel for training, low apprentice wages, and cultural commitments like sorry business. That’s why we’re focusing on younger job seekers and exploring options in Darwin, with the hope they’ll return home with skills.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for new placements in 2025, including at Tiwi College, Xavier College and Tiwi Plantations.
