Fresh Start for Mili Women’s Centre

In the past, women’s activities at Milikapiti were limited to a small group meeting in the breezeway at the TITEB office and there wasn’t much space or equipment to work with. After discussions, a great solution was found: part of the Men’s Centre was divided off to create a new space just for women, complete with its own entrance.

The men helped clean and paint the rooms, and the kitchen and air conditioners were repaired. Women’s Coordinator, Candida Jones, then supported the ladies to set up areas for printing, cooking, sewing and storage.

The new space has made a big difference. The ladies have been busy creating printed fabrics, t-shirts, skirts and soaps for the 2024 Darwin Art Fair. They’ve also provided catering, supported school and on-country activities, and shared self-care packages with local women.

The Centre now employs two women through Job Trials and is looking to grow. In 2025, we’ll explore new micro-business ideas in art or catering.
