Growing Strong Together
The Women’s Centre in Wurrumiyanga has been busy building small businesses and creating opportunities for Tiwi women. From arts and crafts to cakes and plants, our team has been working hard and it’s paying off.
Our weaving business is a big hit, with beautiful handmade items like earrings, baskets and table mats selling out quickly. The women use traditional methods, collecting pandanus leaves and natural dyes, then preparing everything by hand before weaving.
We also ran Cake Decorating and Culinary Cooking courses through CDU. These were a huge success, and the ladies really enjoyed them. We’re hoping to run more next year.
The Centre’s garden has come a long way this year too. We’ve cleaned up all the garden beds, built a shade house, and started a nursery for seedlings and small plants. The women have added beautiful artworks and created inviting spaces for visitors to enjoy.
We also proudly supported the Share the Dignity drive again, delivering hygiene packs to women in our community. We’re committed to helping Tiwi women stay strong, healthy and independent, and we’re excited to keep growing in 2024–25.
