Around 80 children attend Milikapiti School, which is a safe and happy place for learning.
TITEB employs a full-time RSAS School Attendance Officer who is based at Milikapiti School. Support is provided by the RSAS Coordinator and School Attendance Supervisor who are based in Wurrumiyanga community. The RSAS Coordinator makes fortnightly trips to Milikapiti to attend meetings and planning sessions with the School Attendance Officer, school principal and stakeholders.
Getting to school
The RSAS runs a bus service every morning. Children are encouraged to walk to school however if they are ready at the front of their house the RSAS bus can collect them and drive them to school. Tiwi College senior students are rostered on Monday mornings to assist with the collection of Tiwi College students as well.
Family follow-up visits
Each morning the RSAS Officer checks the roll and follows up with the families of children not at school. Where possible they will support the children to get to school. All follow-up visits are reported to the school and Truancy Officers. Throughout the day RSAS provides follow-up assistance to the school and students as requested.
No school no shop
RSAS staff visit the local store to make sure children are not hanging around and encourage them back to school. The ‘no school no shop’ policy is well enforced in Milikapiti, however the RSAS Officer still engages with shop staff and members of community on a regular basis to reinforce the attendance message.
Community/school events and meetings
The RSAS Team supports all school events and a representative attends all relevant meetings and community events. A community events calendar is displayed at the school and copies made available at school, TITEB offices and TITEB website.
